POLICING IN NAZI GERMANY
This presentation evaluates the role played by German policemen in the events of the Shoah. It examines the organizational structure of the German police under National Socialism, describes the role of the police in acts of atrocity and mass murder, and evaluates the various theories related to perpetrator motivation. The Order Police (Ordnungspolizei) consisting of uniformed precinct policemen, the police battalions, and members of the German gendarmerie were directly responsible or complicit in the killing of over one million men, women, and children and became key actors in the destruction of the European Jews and the enforcement of Nazi racial policy in the occupied territories.
